The Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG) was created in 2001 to combat the growing concern amongst animal welfare organisations regarding unethical classified advertising of pets. In certain cases, such ads were illegally offering dogs banned under the Dangerous Dog Act, endangered animals or advertising establishments which were not fit for the breeding or boarding of animals. There was also concern that readers of newspapers and magazines, which carried pet advertising, were not even given some of the basic principles surrounding the selection and purchase of a pet. PAAG would like to know of any inappropriate classified adverts both online and in print but unfortunately is not in a position to take action in every individual case. We would advise members of the public to report any advert they are concerned about to the dog legislation officer at their local police station.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Established in 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home aims never to turn away a dog or cat in need of our help. We reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners or care for them until new homes can be found for them and educate the public about responsible pet ownership. We care for around 12,000 dogs and cats every year at sites in South West London, Old Windsor (Berkshire) and Brands Hatch (Kent).

The Blue Cross

The Blue Cross provides practical support, information and advice for pet and horse owners. Through its network of animal adoption centres it rehomes thousands of animals each year. Its hospitals provide veterinary care for pets of people who cannot afford private vets’ fees.

Cats Protection

Cats Protection, the UK’s largest cat welfare charity, rehomes and reunites thousands of cats every year through its network of voluntary run branches and adoption centres. It promotes the benefits of neutering and helps finance 120,000 neutering procedures annually. Its vision “to ensure that every cat is given the chance of life where it will be treated with kindness and an undestanding of its needs” is further supported by its educational programmes and the provision of a wide variety of cat welfare information.
